The Community Speed Watch is a complete farce, and even the local Police speed through the village, doing over 30 mph travelling over the speed limit on routine journeys. The statement from Police Liasion Officer commenting that the traffic survey along The Guildford Road nettet an average speed of 28 MPH is poppy cock. The other day, I turned into the village off the A30 and watched four cars who turned in front of me travelled through the village to get to the A322 lights and Windlesham.
There is no rocket science needed in stopping the non local traffic nor the speeding. The Community Speed Watch team, although doing a fairly good job measure the speed of traffic through the village at 3.30pm when traffic is light or it is simply school traffic. When they need to do it is around 7pm on a Thursday or Friday night when the boy racers speed through the village. Perhaps they will wait until someone gets killed which sadly is the normal response.
The Highways Department at SCC are also guilty as hell of installing double yellow lines in the village without prior notification to those affected by their actions and also without correct planning consent and to make it worse, when you put in a complaint, no one ever bothers to get back to you. I welcome comments from others with similair concerns and if we get enough comments and feedback perhaps those in power may listen.
I agree that speeding can be a problem. Bagshot suffers from the same problem as many parts of Surrey-Heath, in that once you enter a 30mph zone you are not reminded again, until you re-enter the zone. The police say that street lighting defines the zone, but reminders (eg: 30mph discs on lamp posts) can have a great affect. It is cheap and deals with, I suspect, the bulk of speeding drivers. This measure would be cheap to implement.
I live on Guildford Road and I would like to say that in the last 5 months there has been 3 Collisions, one of which went into a property on Guildford Road damaging a wall. Also another incident an lady was injured and not sure if she was hit by the car. Now speeding along this road goes on throughout the day and into the night. It is all well and good having the Community Speed Watch but as most people do when approaching a speed camera, the driver will slow down and once passed carry on speeding. The mini roundabout near the Dentist is like the Le Mans race track. I would also like to point out that the first set of pedestrian crossings on Guildford Road are a waste of time, countless times i have stood there with my daughter trying to cross the road to school. Do drivers stop – NO!! This really needs to be a proper pedestrian crossing either are Puffin one or Pelican one instead of the traditional Zebra.
